The History of the Facebook Logo
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Facebook? The blue and white logo with the letter “F” in a red box, right? Actually, this design has undergone many iterations throughout Facebook’s history. On February 4th, 2005, Facebook launched its new website which featured an updated logo without any text. It was during this period of time that they changed the color scheme to include dark blue instead of black and light grey for accents.
It’s hard to believe that the Facebook logo has changed so drastically over the years. When it first launched in 2004, there was no “F” in the word “Book.” The company wanted their name to be a representation of how social media would connect people from all around the world and show them what other people were doing. It took them four years before they finally settled on a logo with an “F,” which is now one of the most recognizable logos in history.
Facebook started in 2004 as a social networking site for college students. It was originally called thefacebook.com because it was designed to create an online directory of people on campus that could be accessed by anyone with a Harvard email address, which is still their domain name today. The first logo featured the letters fb in blue and green, but this design did not last long before they were replaced with the iconic “F.” This came about when co-founder Dustin Moskovitz suggested adding color to make it more visually appealing during one of their brainstorming sessions.
